      About This Santorini Tour

      Talk about local color.

You'll paddle through waters glimmering in multiple shades of blue, and see beaches of black volcanic sand, the iron-rich rocks of Red Beach, chalky white cliffs, and the black pebbles of Kambia Beach, where a picnic and picture-perfect snorkeling round out an unforgettable adventure.

Santorini's natural beauty is legendary, but it's the result of a cataclysmic natural disaster around 1628 B.C.: a volcanic explosion that blew most of the island – then called Thera – into the stratosphere. The remnants fell back down in a rain of hellfire that engulfed thousands of square miles, while towering tsunamis thundered toward Crete at jet speed. It was the death knell of a sophisticated culture that predates Athens and Rome, and launched a dark age that set back the course of Western civilization by a millennium.

Hearing the echoes, Plato alluded to a mysterious island utopia that fell out of favor with the gods and sank into the sea. Was his shining Atlantis ancient Thera? All we know is that the blast was heard as far away as China, and that the great Minoan cities of Akrotiri and Knossos wouldn't be inhabited again for more than 3,000 years.

The water cradled by the crescent of Santorini to the east and smaller islands to the west is the crater the volcano left. It makes for delightful kayaking and sightseeing, but it's beauty that had a high price.

      The boom that busted Thera

Estimates of the blast that blew out the center of ancient Thera range from 40 to 40,000 Hiroshima-type atom bombs. The shining light of what may have been the utopia of Atlantis was extinguished, eventually bequeathed by the gods (in Plato's view) to the more deserving Greeks. After the golden age of Athens, the Romans considered themselves the rightful heirs to the fabled Atlantis legacy.
