About This Budapest Tour
Budapest saw an influx of settlement during the Mongol invasion of Europe, which occurred back in the 13th Century. Settlers sought asylum from the attacks that were inflicted by Genghis Khan, his sons, and grandsons. Budapest's royal families resided in the Castle District, so expect to walk in the footsteps of some of the area's most dignified occupants on this tour. A local historian will feed your knowledge on the district's past, when former female ruler Maria Theresa, the Habsburgs, and former King of Hungary Franz Joseph were in power. An abundance of fascinating ancient buildings makes up the landscape, which is also tied together with a sprinkling of libraries and museums.
Take in sweeping views of the metropolis from the Castle District's elevated position and look out onto the Danube River at Fisherman's Bastion, where a panoramic viewing terrace can be found. You will have the opportunity to visit the ruins of Hungarian community's church on the grounds of one of the area's surviving buildings, Mary Magdalene Tower. Roman Catholic house of worship Matthias Church will also be visited when you explore the heart of the Castle District. Learn about the notable people who once lived here and gain a deeper understanding of Hungary's tribal traditions, religions, and cultures as you survey the Buda Castle complex and lesser known buildings in this fairytale-like area.
Glimpse into Budapest’s Past
Budapest has been the seat of the kings since the Middle Ages, but has been inhabited since the Stone Age! At the end of the 9th century, a tribe of Hungarians settled on the land, which was occupied by the Romans in the first century BC. The first king of Hungary was honored with the completion of St. Stephen's Basilica, which took 54 years to build.
Please meet in front of the entrance to the Hilton Budapest, which is located in the Castle district at Hess Andras ter 1-3.
