Live your own Icelandic saga on a tour of the Reykjanes peninsula's volcanic terrain, fit only for those with a sense of adventure and conqueror's spirit. The Vikings traveled on sledges or skis to discover new territories in the land of fire and ice, but you'll traverse these rugged lands in an all-terrain Super Jeep, equipped to battle the most treacherous turf.

You'll first embark on the Eldborg crater, nicknamed The Fire Castle because of its flaming red walls in a sea of mossy green fields. The crater, miraculously symmetrical in shape, was formed by an eruption that occurred almost 3,000 years ago. Summon your Viking strength and prepare to trek up Eldborg's walls and stare into the crater's “infinite abyss”.

Your next encounter with Icelandic lore requires strength of will and your imagination, as you discover uncharted territories and invade the dwellings of elves and trolls. Uncovering a cavernous entrance only a Viking could find, your guide will navigate you through lava tubes and caves, careful not to awaken the trolls lurking within the walls – legend has it they turn to stone by the first ray of daylight.

Even the toughest explorers work up an appetite, but fear not. Your expedition includes a stop at the fishing village of Grindavik, where you'll be served traditional Icelandic fare: a decadently rich lobster soup with freshly baked bread. You'll make the journey back to Reykjavik with your belly content and your heart full.

      The real saga

There may still be some Icelanders unwilling to believe that Eldborg is a strictly natural phenomenon. In the ancient saga Book of Settlements, the old and blind Thorir dug a hole in the ground to protect his farm from a savage man roaming his lands. After an overnight eruption in Thorir's hole, the flaming red Eldborg crater was born.
