About this Reykjavik tour
The road to Thingvellir was paved with good intentions and treacherous conditions for the Icelanders of yore, but your journey will be nice and easy. You'll stare down a crack in the earth and right into Icelandic saga, at this UNESCO site, as you visit the legendary gathering place of Vikings and Norse chieftains, where thousands of Icelanders gathered and formed the Althing, Europe's first parliamentary body, in 930 A.D.
Imagine yourself a founding father among the pastures of green moss and wild flowers sprouting from centuries-old lava fields and craters. See the remnants of these legendary Icelanders as you explore the shelters they fashioned out of turf, twill, and rock, dwelling in these shelters for the duration of the assembly. Picture yourself the Law Speaker and stand atop the Law Mount, where laws were professed and judgments passed.
Your tour of Iceland's Golden Circle continues to the Gullfoss waterfalls, where the river Hvita converges and drops almost 100 feet down a rugged canyon, the rushing waters reflecting golden in the sunshine.
Such is the majesty of Gullfoss that at the turn of the 19th century, Sigridur Tomasdottir, Iceland's first environmental activist, would have given her life to protect them from foreign investors seeking to harness their energy. She marched barefoot for almost 300 miles from Gullfoss to Reykjavik, her feet bleeding but spirit intact, defying the richest and most powerful men in Iceland and threatening to hurl herself into abyss of the Gullfoss to preserve her precious golden falls.
Just as so many have before you, come experience the drama, the beauty, and the irreverence of Iceland's rich cultural history and dazzling landscape.
A leap of faith
Right by the Law Mount at Thingvellir is a rift in the earth about 18 feet wide. The chasm, known as Flosigja, is named after an Icelandic saga in which the lawyer Njal was burned by his relative, Flosi. When hotly pursued by those seeking revenge for Njal's death, Flosi jumped the chasm (with his armor on) and miraculously landed safely on the other side.
