About this Cobh tour
They don't call them the Fighting Irish for nothing. Scores of battles took place at the Charles Fort along Ireland's rugged shoreline, which must have resembled a shining star to the sailors that approached in the dark night. Today, you can stand at the tip of one of its five bastions and admire the view of Kinsale Harbour.
The Irish must have learned their lesson after Kinsale was besieged in 1601, and Ireland became part of the English crown. Upon rumors that the French were preparing an attack of their own on Kinsale, King Charles II built the star-shaped fort, meant to be impenetrable with walls measuring up to 20 feet thick. "Go on," he seemed to say from his throne. "I dare you."
Dare they did in 1689, when French forces attacked the sturdy fort in support of England's ousted King James II, who was desperate to retain control of Ireland and Kinsale. The luck o' the Irish seemed to have run out then, when French forces found the Fort's sea walls impregnable but their land walls rather easy to get by.
Charles Fort was relatively quiet for hundreds of years afterwards, until it was taken over by the Irish Free State in 1922. The Fort then became embroiled in a civil war between the state and the anti-treaty forces, where it was extensively burned and damaged. You'll see the Fort as it is today, war-torn but proud.
One of Ireland's most famous and tragic ghosts is the White Lady, said to roam the rock-solid walls at Charles Fort. According to legend, one of the fort's soldiers married a local girl, and they stayed at the fort on their wedding night. The soldier fell into a drunken stupor while on guard duty, a big no-no – he was shot by a firing squad, and his grieving bride flung herself into the sea from a fort wall.
