About this Bologna Tour
You can talk engineering and handcraftsmanship and 0-60 times and "proud racing heritage" all you want. Italian supercars are about sex.
"Young or old, gay or straight, hair-highlighted hipster or bush-bearded loner, guys dig cars," reported Men's Health in a 2011 "Techlust" column. "Cars are a focal point for testosterone." Indeed, for men, the mere sight of a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta has the hormone-surging, head-snapping pull of a Swimsuit Edition model in line at the post office. In a swimsuit. They can't help but stare, glassy-eyed and slack-jawed.
It's no secret that men's higher brain functions short-circuit in such situations. It's the reason Ferruccio Lamborghini christened his iconic 1974 V-12 coupe "Countach," a common Northern Italian expression of awe at the sight of a beautiful woman. (And, according to legend, the only reaction Lambo's chief designer could muster on first sight of the Countach prototype.)
But while these speed machines are visual Viagra for men, women may respond more to aural stimulation. In a 2008 study, men and women listened to sound recordings of revving Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and a four-cylinder compact. About half the men showed signs of sexual arousal. But all of the women did. In fact, the economy car's wimpy whine actively alienated them, while men showed no response.
All of which makes this Motor Valley museum tour a most unmuseum-like experience. It's about passion, pure and primeval. The sights and sounds of these sports cars and super-cycles are supreme sensory thrills, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. In other words, this isn't a tour just for car buffs and gearheads. It's for anyone with a pulse.
The fast and the curious: Manufacturer's Shocking Retail Price
The first thing people ask at Motor Valley museums (once they're regained the power of speech) is: "How much?" Well, Ducati's hand-built, limited-production Desmosedici, a cycle with more horsepower than most cars, goes for upwards of $73,000. Be prepared to shell out more than $400K for Lamborghini's Aventador. And Ferrari's 950-horsepower LaFerrari (only 499 were produced, from 2013-15) retailed for more than $1.4 million.
