      • Walking tour: Explore the neighborhood known as Oltrarno ("on the other side of the Arno River"), destination of choice since the 1500s for those seeking the finest handmade goods. Beginning in the lovely Piazzo Santo Spirito, we'll stroll narrow streets lined by warrens of small workshops, stepping inside to watch meticulous artisans practicing timeless crafts.
      • Understanding – and support: Designed for travelers seeking a deeper understanding of Italian culture, this tour focuses on the traditions and overall importance of Florentine craftsmanship. A portion of the booking fee goes to a foundation that supports apprenticeship programs in these increasingly endangered trades.
      • More than a guide: Even by GoBe standards, your tour leader is special. Known officially as "docents" (from the Latin for teacher), these M.A.- and Ph.D.-level experts bring passion and insight to their subject, encouraging questions and participation.
      • Your group, your tour: This private experience lets you tailor departure time and overall pace to your group's preferences. The tour usually runs about three hours, but even that's flexible.

      Meeting point

Please meet your guide in front of Bar Ricchi, located at Piazza Santo Spirito 8/9r, across the Arno, in Oltrarno. Cross Ponte Santa Trinita (one bridge west of the Ponte Vecchio), and then cut thru to piazza via side street, Via d. Presto di S. Martino.

      Helpful hints

Please keep in mind that we are guests in the workshops of these artisans. They have graciously agreed to let us interrupt their work day in order to share their art and the heritage of their craft with us. We ask that you keep in mind the preciousness of this gift. If you have any questions for the artisans, please do not hesitate to ask. Your guide is happy to act as a translator. While this is not designed as a shopping trip, you are more than welcome to make purchases along the way. Simply let your guide know of your interest and he will make sure that it fits into the course of the program. If you would like to spend an extended period of time in any of the shops, we politely request that you return afterwards, as to not hinder the flow of the walk.

Lastly, part of the price of this walk is donated to the Context Foundation for Sustainable Travel which, among other things, supports an apprenticeship program for the artisans of the Oltrarno who often have a difficult time attracting and retaining apprentices to carry on their work traditions. Thank you, from the Context Foundation, for supporting this important project
