About this Florence Tour
Miles of timeless Tuscany are on view from the walls of Monteriggioni. Since the mighty castle was built in the early 1200s, vistas of olive groves and vineyards have stretched like an endless fresco around this tranquil village. This is the landscape that inspired Leonardo da Vinci. These are the walls and towers that stirred Tuscan poet Dante as he penned his Divine Comedy. Contemplate the beauty of wine country. Now let's taste it.
Chianti's wineries welcome visitors with much more than samples of their wines. You'll also share the passion of the winemakers and the legacy they treasure. Since the 1300s, this region has cultivated the Sangiovese grape that's the heart and soul of Chianti's wines. But that long history is only part of the story. Tour the cellars and see how innovations and technology pair harmoniously with the Chianti's cherished heritage.
As you sip these aromatic reds, your guide and vintner-hosts uncork blending secrets that go back centuries. Sample and nibble to discover the flavors you enjoy most with this delicious wine. Swirl and sip to detect those cherry notes as you learn about Chianti's sub-regions. Keep on sipping as you hear what it takes to make Chianti Superiore, Chianti Classico, and premium Chianti Classico Riserva wines. Aren't you glad we're doing the driving?
Back in the 1300s, when those tasty grapes were first cultivated, Siena was a city that rivaled Florence and Venice. With its maze of enticing lanes and gorgeous shell-shaped central square, Siena is made for leisurely strolling (or galloping horses during its famous Palio horse race). As the sun dips over this medieval town, settle in for dinner on the square and a toast to timeless Tuscany. Salute!
Why is that crowing black rooster on Chianti Classico labels?
This legend dates to Florence and Siena's rivalries in the Middle Ages. To resolve the disputed Chianti border, each town dispatched a knight on horseback at dawn, signaled by a rooster's crow. Siena chose a white rooster and Florence chose a black one (but they kept theirs in a box without food for days). The hungry rooster crowed well before dawn, giving Florence's knight a head start. Dispute resolved. Black rooster immortalized.
