The early bird…
A black rooster struts proudly on every bottle of Chianti Classico wine, a symbol of the wine's protected production status. The story of how the rooster got there dates back to around the year 1200. Florence and Siena were rivals, each claiming as their own the fertile land where Chianti wine is produced. To end the rivalry, each city agreed to send a rider out as soon as the rooster crowed one morning. Where the two riders met would be the border between the two cities' territories. The cunning Florentines used a hungry rooster who woke up much earlier, giving them a head start and the claim to most of the land. Looks like the early bird gets the wine.
