      • Brunelleschi's Dome: Ascend the church's marvel of engineering, catch your breath, and be rewarded with stunning 360-degrees of the city, then descend into the crypt to get the full Duomo experience.
      • Delicious ending: Unwind after your climbing workout with a delightful sampling of local Chianti wine, cheese, and balsamic vinegar at a nearby location. You've earned it!
      About this Florence Tour

Florence is immediately recognizable in photos thanks to one special feature: the enormous, red-tiled dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. The dome's fame is so great that most people don't even know the cathedral's real name. They just call it "il Duomo."

See for yourself why Florence's Duomo is a must-see no matter how short your stay in the city. Beat the lines with this GoBe tour for an exclusive voyage of Duomo discovery. After you learn all about the Duomo's history, including its 140-year construction, from an introduction video, get ready for breathtaking views of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Florence from the outdoor roof terraces of the cathedral. Gaze over the roofs of the buildings below, spreading out to the surrounding hills. Try to pick out other landmarks of Florence, like the Palazzo Vecchio and Santa Croce church.

After visiting the terraces, you can take the opportunity to climb up even higher and tackle the dome itself. From the top of the dome you can look down at the people below and plan your next move. Will you climb the bell tower next? Or check out the golden doors of the Baptistery? Or will you descend into the crypt, going down into the bowels of the Duomo and its past?

However you choose to spend your time after the tour, pause for a moment beforehand and relax with a Chianti wine tasting, served not far from the cathedral square. With 463 steps up the dome under your belt, go ahead and have some more cheese.

If I could turn back time

You'll probably notice something strange about the large clock hanging high above the door inside the Duomo. Not only are there 24 numbers on the clock face, but they're backwards. The numbers on the clock are arranged counter-clockwise because this clock keeps time according to an old Italian method different from the way we keep time today. The clock counts down the hours left before sunset, so it has to be adjusted frequently to match the changing seasons. Sunset used to mean the end of the day, but these days there's plenty more to do in Florence after dark.
