      Too big for his britches

As you tour the Piazza della Signoria, you'll notice a familiar figure standing in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. It's a copy of Michelangelo's David. If you look closely, you'll see that David's left leg is a little too long, compensating for his casual pose. This statue was intended for the cathedral, but the citizens of Florence quickly came to identify with the defiance and optimism of the iconic sculpture as a symbol of their own struggle against the ruling Medici family. So they put it where everyone could see it as commentary on the strength of the underdog. Medicis, look out!
