About this Florence Tour
Visitors have come to Venice for centuries and fallen in love with its watery "streets" and impossibly buoyant structures. Its historical achievements are remarkable, as are its origins: a city built on over 117 islands, linked by man-made canals and bridges. Unfortunately, this city that was once known as the "Bride of the Sea" is gradually sinking into its lover's arms, the Adriatic. As long as there is land to walk upon, however, Venice remains a prime destination for history and architect buffs, travelers, and lovers in general.
With this all-day tour originating in Florence, you’ll immerse yourself in this beautiful regional capital. It was once its own republic, with an established trade empire that reached the farthest corners of the globe. Arrive just outside the city, then have free time to enjoy the morning, wandering through its walkway streets, finding personal discoveries in its shops, markets, and communities. If you wish, ride a gondola through its narrow waterways (for a fee).
After enjoying lunch on your own in one of its many fine restaurants or trattorias, reunite with your group and meet your guide who’ll take you on an unforgettable tour of the city. Learn about Venice's rich tapestry of history as it grew into a powerful political and social force from Piazza San Marco and the Doge's Palace.
Naturally, you will see all of the other landmarks symbolizing the city, including St. Mark's Basilica and its accompanying Campanile, and the Bridge of Sighs. Its unusual name comes from the prisoners who would glance at the loveliness of Venice and resign themselves to incarceration with a heavy heart. You will likely do the same once you leave "The Floating City" and its unique character.
Padlocks of love
Ponte dell'Accademia, Ponte degli Scalzi, and Ponte di Rialto, three of the four bridges that span Venice's Grand Canal, have attracted scores of lovers who attach padlocks to the rails, often throwing away the keys to symbolize the eternal nature of their love. The trend, which is thought to have begun in Rome in 2006, is a nightmare for the city. Officials have cracked down on the "love locks" and actively discourage people from doing this, noting that it's an eyesore that puts undue stress on these old structures.
