About this Florence Tour
Tuscany is a rolling patchwork of sunflower fields, lush vineyards, and silvery olive groves. Tucked away in these hills, you'll find iconic Italian architecture and artistic treasures. And we won't keep you waiting. You'll see one of the country's most celebrated sights on your very first stop.
In Pisa's poetically named Piazza dei Miracoli ("Square of Miracles"), the Torre Pendente (Leaning Tower) will angle for your attention. And it deserves it. But don't let it take your eyeballs away from the splendor of the Duomo (cathedral), the harmonious architectural styles of the Baptistery, or the frescoes of the monumental cemetery building. (After this visual feast, a delizioso lunch treats the rest of your senses.)
As you approach San Gimignano, you'll see why this UNESCO-listed site is the "Town of Fine Towers." The hilltop bristles with a medieval skyline of tower houses built by aristocratic families to flaunt their wealth and power. (There were once 72 towers – imagine that skyline.) After the Plague came in the 1300s, power faded away. Centuries later, this misfortune is your bonus as you savor this town's rare, preserved spirit.
Roll on through the Chianti region to Siena, another atmospheric medieval town. Made for leisurely strolling or galloping horses (more about that below), Siena has an enticing maze of red-brick lanes and a gorgeous cathedral where we'll pop in to see art by Michelangelo, Bernini, Donatello, and more. Il Campo, the central square, seems to hang out a sign inviting you to relax. Grab a gelato and RSVP. It's a delicious way to wind up a day in Tuscany.
Talk about neighborhood rivalry…
Every summer, Siena's citizens compete in feisty medieval style in Il Palio, Europe's most famous horse race. Ten of the city's 17 neighborhoods (selected by lot) gear up. Colorful flags fly, jockeys are chosen, horses are blessed, and then the bareback riders are off! The turns around Il Campo square are so fast and furious that horses often finish the race without their riders. Thousands have passionately cheered Il Palio since 1656.
Please make your way inside Santa Maria Novella train station, Florence, to the front of the pharmacy with the green cross, to meet your tour guide.
