About this Livorno Tour
Here's your cheat sheet on Livorno's history. Under Medici Family rule (from the 15th through 18th centuries), Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition were invited to Livorno to boost the resident population (previously a meager 700). Then power changed hands to the Lorraines of Austria (aside from a few pesky occupations by Napoleon). By the 19th century, Livorno started making major cash from its shipbuilding industry.
With that history lesson mentally filed away, you're ready to spy the cultural sights while biking through the city with your guide. It's water views all around thanks to a network of canals in Piccola Venezia (Little Venice). Picture-perfect ruins at the 16th-century Fortezza Nuova (New Fortress). Grand statues and 19th-century buildings around Livorno's largest square, the Piazza della Repubblica. And a foodie's dream in Il Mercato Centrale, the bustling Central Market.
After some more pedaling, you'll come upon the Cathedral of Livorno. Although the structure was rebuilt in 1952, it houses some 17th-century artistic treasures. You'll hit a high note at the Goldoni Theater, one of Italy's most grand and historic opera houses. Pay respects to the fallen heroes of World War I at a monument in front of the Church ofSanta Maria del Soccorso. And explore more city squares in Piazza Cavour and Piazza Magenta.
Put your foot to the pedal to take in even more characteristic city landmarks, including a scenic waterfront promenade that leads to the iconic chessboard-patterned Terrazza Mascagni,a balustrade-bedecked terrace overlooking the stunning blue sea. By the time of the final swoosh of your bike's kickstand, you'll truly understand the heart of Livorno.
That's your answer when friends ask if you saw Livorno's top attraction. Because one of this GoBe tour's stops is Terrazza Mascagni, the famed seaside terrace made up of 34,800 black and white tiles that look like a giant's chessboard. Built in 1925, it was originally named Terrazza Ciano after the leader of Livorno's fascist movement. But, after a post-WWII expansion, this stunner was renamed in honor of Pietro Mascagni, the celebrated Livorno-born opera composer.
