About this Livorno Tour
Permission to board granted. It's time to cruise the canals of Livorno's Little Venice. In the 17th century, the ruling Medici dukes ordered the building of this district to help wealthy merchants get their products from local warehouses to Livorno's thriving port. Now you'll follow the very same waterways that helped cash flow into the city in its heyday. Cha-ching!
Dotting these canals are the formerly grand estates of these merchants, plus the statue-filled historic squares, quaint churches, and imposing fortresses of Old Town. You'll slip through the emerald waters past tethered boats and under medieval bridges as you make your way from the Piazza della Repubblica all the way to Livorno's bustling Central Market with its mouthwatering food wares. Your GoBe guide will point out the most important landmarks along the route.
And just as fascinating as those above ground sights can be, your guide will also tip you off to all of the old gangways and historic cellars tucked into nooks and crannies along these canals. While hordes of tourists are wandering aimlessly around the Piazza della Repubblica, you'll be stealthily gliding beneath its vault to get an entirely different viewpoint of the city with GoBe at your side.
After exploring Livorno by water and docking, you'll have a better grasp of what to do on land. So stroll that seafront. Go full-on foodie at the Central Market. Get a closer look at cultural sights. Or simply sip an Italian coffee in the shade of a palm tree. This charming city is all yours to claim.
Heads are gonna roll
Legend has it that touchy Livorno sculptor, Amedeo Modigliani, pitched several of his works into the Royal Canal in the early 1900s after they drew harsh criticism. Though he was unappreciated in his time, the art world was lusting after these "lost Modiglianis" by 1984 (the year that would have been the sculptor's 100th birthday). After eight days of dredging the canal, three sculpted heads were uncovered to global fanfare. Sadly, it was all a hoax. The heads were fake!
