About this Livorno Tour
Discover the port city of Livorno on this GoBe tour of the city's highlights. Equipped with an electric bicycle that makes getting around not only fast, but easy, you'll get to experience the Tyrrhenian coast in a unique way.
Then ride along the beachfront promenade, where you can admire grand 19th-century villas built in the Italian Art Nouveau style. Imagine waking up to this view every morning!
Let your electric bike do the hard work for you as you ascend the hills that ring the port. As you reach the heights above Livorno, you'll come to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montenero. This church was built, according to legend, on the site of a local shepherd's miraculous discovery of a painting of the Virgin Mary. Explore the beautiful religious complex or simply rest your legs a little and admire the panoramas spread out below you. When you've rejuvenated a little, continue exploring the natural scenery of the hills in the neighborhood of Castellaccio.
Even with the help of electricity, biking can be hungry work. Lunch and a wine tasting is part of your inclusive experience. Enjoy Tuscany's famous cuisine and delectable wine as you reflect on your exciting, informative, and delicious Livorno adventure.
The Moor you know…
One of the most well-known landmarks of Livorno is a statue of Ferdinand I of Tuscany surrounded by four Moorish slaves in chains. Pietro Tacca's 1626 statue, known as the Monument of the Four Moors, represents the victory of Tuscany over the Ottomans. One very influential member of the sculptural group is a slave with distinct African features. This may reflect the darker history of Ferdinand II, who completed the statue honoring his grandfather in the 1660s. Ferdinand II may have been involved in the African slave trade. Whatever the case, the statue is a fascinating example of cultural norms in the days of Tuscany's military strength.
