Lip smacking alla Livornese
When you picture Italian food, you probably don't think mouth-on-fire flavor. But Livorno's multiculturalism spiced up its local cuisine. In the 1600s, the city gave an open-arms welcome to Sephardic Jews escaping the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition. Here, the Jewish community thrived and introduced some tastes of Spain, including exotic spices and the tomato, a recent American transplant. We owe them a big grazie for bringing big flavor to Livorno's table.
