About this Milan tour
With every step, the city's marvels unfold. This 60-minute walk through Milan's center takes you through centuries of art and culture as your guide unlocks stories of its most inspiring sights. Stroll towards the Milan Cathedral and feel your eyes sweeping skyward to its magnificent facade. But also note how the city's streets radiate from and encircle this Gothic masterpiece. This is the very heart of Milan.
Architects and artisans toiled for almost six centuries to create this elaborate cathedral (the last gate was inaugurated in 1965) and to decorate it with more statues than any other building on the planet. Some patient soul has tallied up the art of the ages and counted 3,400 statues, plus 135 gargoyles and 700 other figures that adorn the cathedral and create the city's most famous silhouette.
If the cathedral is the city's heart, then Victor Emmanuel II Gallery is its cosmopolitan soul. Join fashionable throngs under this shopping center's arching glass roof, browse the chic boutiques, and take a whirl on the dancing bull depicted in a mosaic on the floor. (Your guide can tell you the legend behind this good luck spin.)
In Italy, the birthplace of opera, Milan's La Scala is known as the "temple of opera." As your guide fills you in on this city's passion for the arts, you might just imagine you hear melodies that have fueled passion for opera in this iconic spot since 1778. If you do, just hum along. Arias in the air are part of the magic of Milano.
Adopt a spire, save a cathedral
The figures that stand proudly atop Milan Cathedral do a little moonlighting as fundraisers. To bring in money to restore its spires, clean up pollution, and continue other work, the cathedral put its 135 spires up for adoption. Donors who contribute 100,000 Euros can have a plaque engraved with their name added to the spire of their choice. And for 200,000 Euros, you can claim the main Carelli spire.
