The dazzling Duomo stands at the very heart of the city. After it was commissioned in 1385, top architects were summoned, tons of marble quarried, and hundreds of artisans toiled on and on…for almost 600 years. Today, whether you're gazing at the statues and spires gracing the cathedral's exterior or admiring its interior lit through gorgeous stained-glass windows, those centuries of workmanship are an exquisite experience.

If the Cathedral is the city's grand space for prayer and contemplation, the Victor Emmanuel II Gallery is its temple for shopping and cafe life. A popular meeting spot since it opened in 1877, the Galleria is often called the il salotto di Milano (the drawing room of Milan). Join fashionable throngs of Milanese under its arching glass roof and decorative glass dome, and take a whirl to ward off bad spirits (more about that below).

More than Milan's venue for music, La Scala is a global shrine for the arts. And it looks the part, from its chandelier-lit foyers to private boxes embellished with red velvet and ornate gold decorations. Perhaps you'll imagine the strains of Rossini, Verdi, and Puccini in this elegant setting. And you're sure to hear the inside scoop on La Scala, fascinating anecdotes to difficult divas, from your guide.

Multi-talented Leonardo da Vinci had a hand in designing the defenses of Sforza Castle and he frescoed the walls of this massive castle in the late 1400s. Today, this former palace of Renaissance lords is a museum complex displaying some of Italy's greatest treasures. Masterpieces like Leonardo's largest painting and Michelangelo's last sculpture are here, continuing to inspire this city of the arts.

      A spin for good luck

A mosaic depicting a dancing bull decorates the floor of the Victor Emmanuel II Gallery. It's said to mark the spot where the building's architect fell to his death from a scaffold just weeks before his 14-year project was finished. To avoid any similar bad fortune, a local legend advises that you place your heel firmly on the bull and spin three times. But your heel must hit the right spot, the bull's testicles. (Just look for the worn spot.)
