About This Montecatini Tour
With silvery olive groves, cypresses standing tall, and lush geometric vineyards, the road to Chianti is one of Italy's most scenic. And also one of its tastiest. Travel it with a friendly GoBe guide (and fellow wine enthusiast) right to the wineries, where you'll taste Chianti wines surrounded by the region's celebrated vineyards. Let's raise a glass to a beautiful and delicious afternoon.
Chianti, sometimes called the "Bordeaux of Italy," has been defined as a wine-producing area since 1716. But the Sangiovese grape that's at the heart of Chianti's wines has been grown in these vineyards since the 1300s. As you sample these aromatic ruby reds, the earthy, cherry notes that shine through showcase Sangiovese in all its glory.
The art of blending Chianti is as fascinating and complex as the wine itself. Your guide and vintner-hosts will reveal that true Chianti must be at least 80 percent Sangiovese. You'll also discover the other grapes that are blended into the wine, uncover the secrets of Chianti's eight sub-regions, and find out what it takes to makes Chianti Superiore, Chianti Classico, and premium Chianti Classico Riserva wines. Discovering, and tasting, this wine is a joy!
As a perfect food wine, Chianti pairs beautifully with the classic Tuscan meats and snacks you'll sample at the vineyards. And it's wonderful with pizza, pasta with tomato sauces, or steaks and burgers right off your backyard grill. After this tour, you'll reach confidently for the right wine to enhance your meal. And raise your glass once more to the rolling hills of Chianti.
The Chianti fiasco
Chianti used to come in a fiasco, a round bottle wrapped in a straw basket. In fact, in the early 20th century, fiasco-making involved about 1,000 glassblowers and 30,000 basket weavers. (Baskets made the bottles stand up straight and cushioned them for shipping.) But that was expensive and times have changed. Most winemakers, thinking the fiasco implied a rustic product, upgraded to a standard bottle. A fiasco is now hard to find.
