About This Montecatini Tour
Ever pictured yourself cruising through Tuscan hills in a vintage car like a movie star from a 50s film? Then you'll want to jump into this driver's seat faster than you can say "cinquecento" (that's 500 in Italian). The FIAT 500, introduced in the late 1950s, is the vintage car of everyone's dreams. And now it's yours for real.
So ease into a nostalgic gear and hit the road in a living legend. This classic little car will take you to amazing spots in this "City of the Renaissance." And take you in style. We'll head first to Piazzale Michelangelo to see fabulous views of bridges spanning the Arno River, the iconic red dome of Florence's Duomo (cathedral) rising high above terracotta rooftops, and a gentle horizon of Tuscan hills beyond.
Enjoy the ride and that cute little dashboard on the way to San Miniato al Monte, a gorgeous basilica built atop one of the city's loftiest spots. Views are astonishing, and the church merits some admiring glances too. Started in 1013, it sports an intricately patterned marble facade, a 500-year-old bell tower, and an adjacent monastery where monks make liqueurs, honey, and herbal teas. (Don't buy too much. That trunk is tiny.)
The joys of the open road await on the drive to Fiesole, just beyond the city center. The Romans, who conquered this Etruscan town in the 2nd century B.C., used this prime hilltop location to keep watch for approaching enemies. These days, it's the top spot to contemplate dreamy views of Florence in the valley below. And to fantasize you're really living in that romantic 50s movie.
Definitely a classic
The "original" FIAT 500 was the world's smallest production car and Italians affectionately nicknamed it topolino ("little mouse"). It became a popular symbol of Italy's economic good times in the 50s and 60s, when it was relatively affordable with a price tag equal to about 13 factory workers' salaries. The 500 never lost its appeal and was reintroduced in 2007. But the vintage model now enjoys cult status in its homeland.
