      About This Montecatini Tour

The Pantheon of ancient Rome. Michelangelo's statue of David. London's Marble Arch and the Peace Monument in Washington D.C. All made from Carrara marble. This prized rock stars in momentous sculptures and landmarks all over the on the planet. Now you can see where this where this legendary stuff is cut from in "The Marble Mountains." But hold on tight. These steep, winding, white-knuckle roads go all the way to the top.

You'll climb high and speed through about 2,000 years of history. In the midst of soaring walls and deep in vast caves, you'll hear fascinating stories. Back in Roman times, quarrymen chipped away by hand, cutting about an inch of stone a day. Today you'll see massive machinery that cuts hulking blocks and hear the roar of enormous trucks that haul out thousands of tons of marble a day to ship off around the world.

And yes, the marble that Michelangelo worked to create his masterpieces came from these mountains (more about his David below). Carrara marble was also used for much of the art and architecture you'll see in Pisa and Lucca. Admire the marble facade of Pisa's cathedral, gaze up at more than 180 feet of (slightly askew) white marble at the Leaning Tower, and climb its 296 worn marble steps for a fabulous view of the city.

Then it's on to Pisa to check out what all the Leaning Tower fuss is about. The attraction is arguably the world's most famous mistake, built on ground too soft on one side to balance the bell tower's weight. The tower is one of the buildings connected with the Piazza dei Miracoli cathedral complex, featuring the best in Romanesque architecture. Also worth seeing is the Duomo di Pisa cathedral and the nearby cloistered cemetery. And remember, you don't have to lean on anybody else to see Pisa your way.

In Lucca, a town packed with architectural jewels, the remains of an ancient Roman amphitheater endure in the elliptically shaped Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, now the stage for Lucca's daily life. You'll be an expert spotting marble by now, but don't miss the Cathedral's west facade displaying decorative details dating back to 1204. It's absolutely marble-ous.

      A tower to beauty

In recent years, the Leaning Tower of Pisa underwent extensive renovations to keep it still standing, and leaning. But, if it weren't for an American soldier during World War II, it might not still be here. During a battle in 1944, Leon Weckstein, 23, was told to order "fire" on anywhere German artillery was coming from, and it appeared to be coming from the tower. But the GI couldn't do it. He was transfixed by the Leaning Tower's beauty. Ironically, he had never heard of it before seeing it for himself during the war.
