About This Montecatini Tour
From the beginning, this vast expanse of grass was called a "Square of Miracles" to honor the artistry of the monuments taking shape here. On the Piazza Dei Miracoli's vast stretch of grass, luminous marble buildings shine magnificently. You'll know that crooked campanille right away (and get to know this bell tower better, thanks to an expert guide). The rest of the miracles are waiting to surprise you.
Pisa was a medieval powerhouse and its show-stopping square is an evocative revelation of that time. The massive cathedral, started in 1064 and completed in the 1300s, established Pisa's characteristic Romanesque style. In 1595, a fire destroyed much of the interior but, fortunately, some of the best artists of the Renaissance were available. Not a bad redecorating team.
Step into its glorious interior and see angels cast by sculptor Giambologna and many more masterpieces. Count on your guide to point out all the treasures and reveal centuries of tales. Discover why the remarkable alter was lost to time until the 1920s and how Galileo may have had a flash of brilliance while watching a swaying lamp during Mass.
Admire the Monumental Cemetery built around sacred dirt brought back from the Crusades. Legend holds that bodies became skeletons in this soil in just 24 hours. And cover architecture 101 at the massive Baptistery, with its Romanesque-topped-with-Gothic style. Check out the different arches to identify the styles. And while you're at it, can you detect the slight tilt in this building? Pisa seems inclined to surprise us all.
The shattered tower of Pisa…almost
During World War II, Allied troops advancing on Pisa suspected the Germans were using the tower as a vantage point. If so, the top brass decided it had to be blown up and sent young U.S. Army sergeant Leon Wickstein to radio in an artillery strike if he spotted the enemy. Surveying, and admiring, the tower in his telescope, he hesitated in making the call. In those few seconds, the brass decided on plan B and the tower was spared. Whew!
Please make your way to Piazza Italia, at the bus check point, in front of the train station in Montecatini.
