      About This Naples Tour

Few places on earth have sparked the same curiosity as the lost city of Pompeii, and today you're going straight to the source. Hidden for centuries under volcanic ash, immaculately preserved in time, the excavated city at Pompeii offers a snapshot of Roman life in the 1st century, conserved as it was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

In one of history's great ironies, the eruption occurred just one day after Vulcanalia, the festival of the Roman god of fire and volcanoes, in 79 AD. Pompeii's fate was sealed when three surges of Vesuvius's hot gases and ashes descended rapidly on the city, instantly killing anyone in its path and blanketing the city in layers of ash.

Pompeii wouldn't be found for 15 centuries, its ruins buried under Vesuvius's wrath. But its excavation in 1748 proved to be one of the greatest archaeological discoveries ever: Pompeii was entirely intact: with bodies, buildings, and ancient artifacts shielded from air and moisture by the hardened ash.

Over 1,150 bodies, frozen in their final postures before death, have been found and cast in plaster at Pompeii. You'll see these haunting figures, along with pristinely preserved artifacts and inscriptions that provide extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of the ""lost city"" during the Roman era.

      X-rated pottery

Pompeii was first rediscovered in 1599, when architect Domenico Fontana unearthed frescoes and pottery at the site. He deemed the sexual content depicted on these works so obscene that he covered them with dirt and pretended he never found them. They were eventually found and brought to a museum, but never displayed until recently.
