      About This Padua Tour

The basket you're in begins to rise gently into the sky, and with every second that passes your heart races faster in anticipation of the thrill that lies ahead. As your vantage point keeps rising, the view gets steadily broader and wider.

Soon you're about 2,000 feet up, with the Paduan countryside spread below like a lush carpet patterned in farms, villas, and the occasional castle. The balloon glides softly in the wind toward the city of Padua, and from where you stand you can get a sense of the city not discernible from the ground.

A network of arcaded streets comes together at Palazzo della Ragione, the central square, where fresh fruit and vegetable markets are surrounded by impressive secular and religious buildings. You can see Padua's patchwork of parks, gardens, and waterways, homes, business districts, and plazas, finding points of reference that will help guide your way later. Like Prato della Valle, the second-largest square in all of Europe. At this level, you can appreciate its vast scale in a way the people milling about below can't.

The opportunities for amazing aerial photography are endless on an adventure like this, and raising a glass of wine afterward is the perfect ending; but knowing you're sharing the moment privately, with people you care for, takes the experience to a whole new level.

      Much ado about geography

Any Shakespeare scholars in your group will tell you that much of The Taming of the Shrew is set in Padua, referred to in the play as "nursery of arts." (A main character attends the university.) But the Bard was relying on an erroneous 1570 map, so the character says he arrives in "fruitful Lombardy." Wrong region – Padua is in Veneto. In fact, you should be able to see Venice (as in The Merchant of) from the air, 20 miles east.
