      About This Padua Tour

There are many splendid landmarks in Padua, but only one contains relics from both a saint and a pope: the Basilica of St. Anthony.

Construction began in the year 1232, and the main portion was finished by the turn of the century. The large, multi-domed structure has a decidedly Romanesque exterior, while the interior is pure Gothic. But the treasures inside are what make St. Anthony's an international shrine, and one of Christianity's most celebrated and visited churches – treasures in the form of priceless art and sacred relics.

The main altar is dominated by Donatello's stunning bronze Crucifix from 1446, and the side chapels are dressed with beautiful sculptures, frescos, marble reliefs of miracles performed by St. Anthony, even magnificent 17th-century silver candelabras. The Chapel of the Relics that has drawn pilgrims for centuries.

The niches in the Treasury Chapel contain a foot bone, a fragment of skin, some hair, and the actual undecomposed tongue of St. Anthony, who died in Padua in 1231. When his body was exhumed 30 years later for transfer to the basilica, only the tongue remained intact. For believers, it was proof of the eloquence that had earned him elevation to sainthood: He had preached throughout Italy and France, though he was Portuguese and never learned either language, and reconciled husbands and wives thought to be hopelessly estranged. He even located an unknown burial site, helping to exonerate an accused murder. To this day, Anthony is venerated around the world as the patron saint for the recovery of lost items.

      Guns and roses

Founded by the University of Padua in 1545, the world's oldest botanical garden has seen a lot of history, and even played a role in winning World War II. It became the location for clandestine meetings of Italian partisans fighting both Mussolini and the Nazis, thanks to a resistance leader who also happened to be the university's vice-chancellor.
