About This Padua Tour
Padua is a picturesque city with ancient roots that date back to between the 10th and 11th centuries B.C. It has many arcaded streets that lead to its historic city center, where two large markets spill into each other creating a colorful panorama of goods and people. Here, among the pyramids of fruits and vegetables, you can also find local wines, candies, leather bags, and more.
The beautiful architecture all around the central square is a reminder of Padua's perennial wealth, once second only to Rome's. This includes the 270-foot, barrel-roofed, Gothic-style Palazzo della Ragione, which served as the court of justice for the city beginning in the early 13th century, and is now used for City Council meeting. The Palazzo is said to have the largest roof in Europe not supported by columns.
This walk through history also includes the Prato della Valle. Once the site of an ancient Roman theater, the terrain had turned into a virtual swamp by 1636, when a group of prominent citizens turned it into a venue for jousting and mock battles on horseback. Today, the second-largest square in Europe (behind only Red Square in Moscow) is a popular with joggers, readers, skateboarders, and people-watchers.
Many of Padua's most significant landmarks are found around the central square and Prato della Valle. With this introductory walking tour under your belt, you'll be able to find and enjoy them at your leisure.
On the Piazza del Santo outside the Basilica of St. Anthony, there's an equestrian statue of one of the most famous military leaders of the Italian Renaissance, Erasmo da Arni. Erasmo's nickname, Gattamelata, means "honeyed cat." Some say he got the name because he was agile and cunning in battle; others say it's because his coat of arms featured a honey-colored cat. Maybe it just came from his mother's surname, Gatteli, another variation of the Italian word for cat.
