      About This Pisa Tour

Don't have much time but still want to experience some of the most famous and magnificent art in the world? You've come to the right place! The Accademia Gallery may be small, but it is packed full of unparalleled artistic treasures. Join this GoBe tour for an intimate introduction to Florence's greatest cultural legacies.

Come face to face with Michelangelo's iconic David, a larger-than-life representation of the Old Testament hero who took down a giant and became a king. Discover the challenges the artist faced in bringing his vision to life and the adoption of the finished sculpture by the people of Florence as a symbol of their own collective strength.

Immerse yourself in the art of the birthplace of the Renaissance as you pass through the different halls of the Accademia. Look for names like Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and Uccello, and take in more fascinating Michelangelo pieces like the unfinished Prisoners. Brush up on your mythic Roman history as you take in Giambologna's impressive Rape of the Sabine Women, which can be viewed from any side.

Your tour guide will take you beyond the art for an exploration of Florence's cultural impact in the world of the Renaissance. Let the splendors of arguably the most influential artistic period in Western history surround you and fill you with awe. The pieces you will encounter at the Accademia are sure to move you just like they've been moving people for hundreds of years. Come on in, the art's fine.

      A benevolent dictator

The Accademia Gallery dates its founding back to 1784, when the museum was created as an instructional gallery for art students by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopold of Lorraine. Leopold not only established the Accademia, but also abolished the death penalty and torture in Tuscany, passing the first such law. The smallpox vaccine was also readily available under his reign. Though he left Tuscany to become Holy Roman Emperor in 1790, the fruits of Leopold's time in Florence can still be enjoyed today.
