The Best of Tuscany with Wine Tasting and Lunch
- San Gimignano: Stroll romantic streets and linger in Piazza del Duomo (cathedral square) to admire centuries-old towers that make this a "medieval Manhattan."
- Wine tasting and lunch: Visit the cellars and vineyards, taste the wine, and enjoy traditional Tuscan fare such as pasta, cold meats, cheeses, and local pastries.
- Siena: Tour top sites like the Cathedral and Il Campo square (site of the Palio horse race) with your guide, followed by free time to explore. In Monteriggioni, step into the past at this fortified medieval citadel, where perfectly preserved walls topped with 14 towers encircle a charming village and museum.
About This Pisa Tour
A journey into the heart of bella Toscana reveals its harmonious and expressive soul. You'll see it in a dramatic medieval skyline towering above the vineyards and olive groves. This is San Gimignano, a UNESCO-listed site where tower houses built by aristocratic families open a door to an illustrious past. Although the Plague extinguished the town's importance in the 1300s, its grace and atmospheric spirit still endure.
You'll taste the fruits of time-honored traditions of the land in Chianti. Cultivating vines here goes back to the Etruscans, who lived here even before the Romans. In true Tuscan style, we'll pause for an unhurried interlude at a vineyard, where you'll tour the estate and delve into the winemaking process. Then sit down to sample the wine and tuck into a hearty Tuscan lunch. (You'll soon know why un pisolino, the nap, is a tradition here, too.)
Admire quintessential Tuscan landscapes on the way to Siena. This medieval town is made for leisurely strolling (or galloping horses during its 600-year-oldPalio race). Your guide takes you down an enticing maze of lanes towards the gorgeous cathedral to see work by rock stars of Tuscan art like Michelangelo and Donatello. Practice your Italian by ordering a gelato, linger awhile in the square, and sample the sweet life in Siena.
Literary heritage leaps to life at Monteriggioni, where mighty turrets stirred the Tuscan poet Dante. Seeing its majestic towers, he was inspired to describe the ring of giants around the abyss in his celebrated Divine Comedy. Step through Monteriggioni's gates and into a tranquil village where centuries slip away. Here, as everywhere, the timeless soul of Tuscany merges past and present seamlessly.
A director's dream
With its vineyards, olive groves, rows of cypress trees, and fields of blazing poppies and golden sunflowers, Tuscany has been the backdrop for some of the most gorgeous and memorable films ever: The English Patient, Gladiator, Life is Beautiful, Room with a View, and Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet are just a few. And where else on earth could Frances Mayes' beguiling memoir Under the Tuscan Sun be made into a movie?
