About This Porto Torres Tour
The powerful Doria family of Genoa originally built the medieval castle at Castelsardo in the 12th century as a fortress to protect their lands in Sardinia. Holding down the fort in the 14th century was Brancaleone Doria, who married Eleanor of Arborea, Italy's first female lawmaker – and perhaps first feminist.
It was a political marriage arranged by Eleanor's father, who had raised his daughter in the ways of war. She went to live at Castelsardo with her husband, and soon took up arms against the Crown of Aragon , winning control of most of Sardinia.
Eleanor must have really loved her castle at Castelsardo, because she used her power and influence to create laws that preserved the property rights of women, the most advanced body of laws in Europe at the time . Eleanor's constitution, the Carta Lugo, remained the law of the land in Sardinia until 1827, cementing her legacy as Sardinia's most renowned heroine – and a woman centuries ahead of her time.
Bad-ass lady in history
Many Sardinians credit Eleanor with the country's period of independence. Eleanor was able to wrestle most of Aragon's possessions in Sardinia away, eventually gaining control of the entire island. But just five years after Eleanor's death, Aragon won a major battle against Sardinia and took control of the once-independent state.
Please make your way to the Porto Torres Cruise Terminal at the pier and look for your GoBe Rep with a displayed sign.
