About This Rome Tour
In 19 B.C., general and architect Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, son-in-law of Emperor Augustus, sent soldiers in search of a water source that could supply Rome. According to legend, they found nothing – until a young virgin led them to a spot just over eight miles outside the city where the water flowed freely. Today it's called Salone Springs.
Augustus ordered an aqueduct built; because the terrain prevented a direct route, it extended nearly 14 miles, roughly 12 of them underground. The aqueduct was given the name Aqua Virgo, or Virgin Waters.
The fountain at the end of the aqueduct was plain and simple – until 1732, when Pope Clement XII commissioned a bigger, more grandiose version. Thirty years later, the Fountain of Trevi was inaugurated.
Today, Trevi is the largest, most famous, and arguably the most beautiful fountain in Rome. Above the statue on the right, a relief shows the virgin pointing to the spring; a relief on the left depicts Agrippa showing his aqueduct plans to Augustus. The emperor knew a good plan when he saw it; the aqueduct still channels 21 million gallons of water into Rome every day.
Circus Maximus was the primary venue for chariot races in ancient Rome; by some estimates, it held as many as quarter-million spectators. A charioteer named Scorpus dominated the sport until his death in 95 A.D. During his time racing for the Green faction (teams were identified by color), Scorpus won 2,048 races, becoming richer than his sponsors. No records exist of how Scorpus died, at the age of only 26.
