      About This Rome Tour

What might Caligula do on a modern-day tour of his capital? Rome's decadent third emperor would have liked the idea of a gods-eye inspection of his sprawling city, and would have expected it to be topped off by a grand feast with flowing wine. But, even he would be shocked by the extravagance of the Via Condotti: rich fabrics, leathers, jewels, gold, and other treasures.

You'll fly above the city and see Nero's Tomb, the Foro Italico and Stadio Olimpico sports complexes, and the delicate stone arches of Ponte Milvio bridge – built in 115 B.C. and nearly undone by modern romance (the weight of metal locks placed there by young couples in a now-outlawed tradition). You'll gaze down on the fabled Seven Hills of Rome, survey the elegant landscaped parks at Villa Ada and Villa Pamphili – and see the sacred structures of the Vatican.

Your aerial tour will carry you well beyond central Rome's confines, out east and over the ancient city of Tivoli – famed for the palatial grounds and fountains of Villa d'Este and the massive complex of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman ruins at Villa Adriana, built by the Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century. This idyllic place is the inspiration for every "Tivoli" in the world.

In the Alban Hills southeast of Rome, you'll fly over the green hill towns of the Castelli Romani – Roman Castles – where the city's rich and powerful have built their palatial fresh-air getaways since ancient times. You'll pass Rocca Priora, the "Rock Castle of the Pope" at Rocca di Papa, and baroque Frascati, famous for its wine and grand architecture. In the picturesque hills along the crater lake at Lago Albano, seeing the Pope's summer residence at Castel Gandolfo will be a highlight of your trip.

You'll return to the ground for an exquisite lunch, shopping and more sightseeing, but your head will surely remain in the clouds after this experience fit for an emperor!

Rome on 3,000 Euros a Day

No proper visit to Rome is complete without a stop at the beloved Trevi Fountain for the traditional coin toss! Coins adding up to an incredible 3,000 euros a day go over the shoulder and into the drink here, thrown by people looking to ensure their return to Rome. Swedish sexpot, Anita Ekberg, took things a step further, leaping saucily into Trevi's water herself in Fellini's classic, La Dolce Vita. Today, that stunt would get you a fine of up to 500 euros.
