About This Rome Tour
Michelangelo Buonarroti was a true Renaissance man, highly accomplished as a sculptor, painter, architect, poet, even military engineer. He was considered the greatest artist of his time, and was the first Western artist to have a biography published while he was still living. He created some of the world's best-known works of art – including one, now lost, that was a fraud.
Around the age of eight or nine, Michelangelo went to live and study at a school for sculptors founded by famous Florentine art patron Lorenzo de Medici, who had an eye for talent and spotted the potential in the boy. At the age of about 20, Michelangelo carved a statue of Cupid in the style of the ancient Greeks, and de Medici was struck by an idea: He told Michelangelo that if he could make the statue look as if it had been buried for centuries, they could send it to Rome as an antique, and sell it for a lot more money.
Michelangelo treated the piece with acidic earth, and it wound up in the hands of a cardinal named Riario. In time, word of the sham got out, and Riario demanded his money back. But he was so impressed with Michelangelo's skill that, rather than punish him, he invited Michelangelo to Rome. It was a productive stay for the young artist, who carved the Pieta, the piece that firmly established his artistic genius, at 24.
And he got to keep the money from the sale of Cupid.
Michelangelo rarely signed his works. The only sculpture known to bear his name is the Pieta, which he signed on Mary's sash. But he did occasionally incorporate stylized depictions of his face into his pieces. A closer look at the fresco of The Last Judgment, behind the altar in the Sistine Chapel, shows St. Bartholomew holding a piece of flayed skin. The face on the skin is Michelangelo's.
