The Delights of Cinque Terre
San Gimignano, Italy
- The villages: Visit and explore Manarola, Vernazza, Riomaggiore and Monterosso al Mare. They share the same magnificent coast, but each has its own distinct character and story.
- Scenic boat ride: You haven't seen the Cinque Terre fully till you've seen it from the sea. Your breathtaking jaunt over by boat will take care of that.
- Church of San Giovanni Battista: Maybe visit this 1307 landmark in Monterroso, with its striped marble-and-serpentine motif and a bell tower once used as a defense lookout.
About This San Gimignano Tour
The five cliff side fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, perched along an impossibly-scenic stretch of the Mediterranean, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason.
Here, it's as if most vestiges of the modern world never happened. No cars, no franchise retailers, and only a few right angles. Just riotous jumbles of colorful stucco and tile buildings stacked nearly atop one another – with the azure sea below, and steep green hills crisscrossed with old stone walls and wine terraces above. The villages are connected only by train, boat, and vertigo-inducing seaside footpaths meant more for hikers (or goats) than casual visitors.
After a pleasant coach, boat and train ride, you'll begin your four-village Cinque Terre exploration with a walking tour of medieval Manarola, built impressively on its rocky outcrop. Its tiny harbor has lots of boats that seldom seem to go anywhere, maybe because their owners love the town too much. Next arrive in picture-perfect Vernazza. Once you're done gasping at its setting, you'll be on your own to roam the waterfront piazza, cobbled main street, and maze of caruggi (narrow lanes) that make this village a popular favorite.
Riomaggiore dates back to the 13th century and is famous for its wine and its typical narrow streets, leaving only Monterosso left to visit on this breathtaking spectacular day, as you explore its quaint fishing village. Here you may treat yourself to a Ligurian lunch at one of the cafes, or visit one of the beautiful beaches in your free time. The fresh-caught anchovies and pesto made from local basil are standouts – but on this coast, the food's all amazing.
So is the landscape. Be sure to clear out plenty of image storage space ahead of this tour. You're gonna need it.
The great wall of Liguria
The Cinque Terre climate is ideal for growing wine grapes and olives. But its steep terrain is a great deal less so. Over the centuries, using simple machinery and humongous amounts of hefting, a vast network of stone-walled terraces has spread across the mountainsides above and between villages, creating the vertical vineyards we see today. Total running length of the walls is estimated to rival the Great Wall of China. No Mongol hordes, though.

In case of adverse sea conditions, this tour will operate by bus and train. Travelers will go to Manarola by bus and then proceed by train to Vernazza and Monterosso. The Path of Love is presently closed due to a landslide. Due to the popularity of this area, you may encounter crowds. Shop for local goods such as olive-oil, wine, and pesto. They make excellent gifts and souvenirs.
Expect to walk for about 2 miles, up/down steep inclines and over cobblestones. If your mobility is limited, you may find it too challenging to keep up with the group and enjoy yourself. Tour is not wheelchair accessible.
