A Walking Tour of Sanremo, the City of Flowers

      Sanremo, Italy
      From (USD) $25
      Highlights
      • La Pigna: Explore Sanremo's medieval old town, where charming streets called caruggi twist and cascade down the Ligurian hillside.
      • Corso dell'Imperatrice: This palm-lined boardwalk stretches along the seaside and epitomizes the grandeur for which this resort city is known.
      • Mercato dei Fiori: Italy's most heralded flower market is carpeted by cut flowers grown in the hills surrounding the city.
      About this Sanremo tour

The Italian version of Monte Carlo is exactly what you'd expect of a city that was a magnet for European royalty in the 19th century. You'll find ornate villas, a grand casino, and all the beauty of a Riviera resort town.

You'll also get a sense of what drew so many nobles and notables to Sanremo as you explore La Pigna. The name of this old quarter translates to "the pinecone" – the shape it takes as it spreads into the hills of Liguria. Many of the palaces and squares have been restored, and the sea views from the hillside are just stunning. Even Sanremo's casino harkens to a more glamorous era. It's a Belle Epoque beauty designed by a Frenchman.

One of the most scenic walks is found along the Corso dell'Imperatrice. This palm-lined promenade was a gift from the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna in 1874, who gave the city a pretty penny to beautify the walkway along the sea after a lengthy stay. It was a generous gift, one that she'd never actually see, since the sickly empress died before she could return.

In Sanremo there once was a Brit, whose life could be said to be …

Edward Lear, the English artist, author, and poet who made limericks a popular form of poetry, had a fairly miserable life. The 20th of 21 children, Lear was a sickly man ashamed of his epilepsy. His 40-year lust for a man who never reciprocated his passionate love tormented him. He spent the last dozen years of his life in Sanremo. But none of his friends attended his funeral there, proving that he was as lonely in death as he was in life.
