About This Siena Tour
A village with a story that sparked a love affair with Italy. An atmospheric, almost heavenly place of pilgrimage. And an enchanting town that spans eras and creates some of Italy's sweetest treats. Don't worry, you don't have to choose. GoBe can cover favorite movie scenes, transcendent moments, and sweet-tooth cravings. All in one day.
Feel the essence of Tuscan village life thriving in Cortona's streets and squares. Explore a charming medley of trattorias and artisanal shops in the shadow of a 13th-century clock tower. Admire the Renaissance cathedral and peek beyond the town's walls to fantastic valley views. You'll remember scenes from Under the Tuscan Sun, book or movie, or be inspired (immediatamente!) to discover Frances Mayes' memorable story.
St. Francis of Assisi demonstrated his faith through a life of simplicity. He was canonized in 1228 and the Basilica of St. Francis was started that same year. Its two churches, friary, and crypt (where the saint's remains rest) are a glorious architectural tribute embellished with artistic masterpieces, like the frescoes by Giotto depicting the saint's life. For a man who lived modestly, St. Francis is certainly remembered in magnificent style.
Let serendipity guide you through Perugia's five historic districts. See evocative signs of Etruscan times in its encircling walls and Arch of Augustus. Linger in the main square to admire the fanciful 13th-century fountain, La Fontana Maggiore, and the crenellated palace, Palazzo dei Priori. And don't miss the views from the 16th-century fortress, Rocca Paolina. You may emerge from Perugia's charming lanes a bit dismayed to find yourself back in the 21st century. But take heart, there's Perugian chocolate to soothe your spirits.
The sweetest event
Perugia is famous for chocolate and for its annual Eurochocolate festival, a ten-day-long indulgence where thousands of chocoholics devour tons of the deliciousness every October. The festival includes tastings, theme shows, and artists creating sculptures from huge blocks of chocolate. Clean sheets of canvas are placed around the work so visitors can enjoy the chocolate shavings carved off during the sculpting. Yum!
