About this Siena Tour
Montalcino is a charming, medieval hill town built in the 13th century and once known in the Middle Ages for its tanneries and high quality leather goods. Today, it is most popular for the Brunello di Montalcino wine, made from the grapes on its verdant hillsides. Discover what makes this wine the most highly regarded in the world (hint: it involves a long maturation in casks made from valuable wood.)
Brunello, meaning "little brown one," was aptly named for the brown hue of the grape's skin. But it was determined in 1879 that Brunello and Sangiovese were actually the same grape variety. So Brunello evolved into the name of the wine produced with 100% Sangiovese.
Montalcino farmer Clemente Santi is considered a pioneer, becoming known for producing a 100% varietal wine in the mid-19th century. His grandson, Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, produced the first modern version of Brunello di Montalcino in 1888. By the end of World War II, the Biondi-Santi family was the only commercial producer and the wine was considered as one of Italy's rarest. Today, there are close to 200 producers of this celebrated wine known all over the world.
Your journey to Montalcino walks you through the history of the ancient winemaking tradition as you visit some of the finest producers of Brunello di Montalcino. You will be treated to tastings of the most highly regarded wine in the world in a quintessential Tuscan setting. Enjoy savory bites of local salami and other Italian meats in addition to a taste of the region's olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
As you raise a glass in the birthplace of Brunello, harken back to its ancestral roots and the passion of its early producers in the unassuming village of Montalcino.
English reporters coined this catchy term for the 2008 scandal involving Brunello producers accused of wine fraud. Six were indicted for adding merlot, cabernet sauvignon, or petit verdot to their wines to appeal to a broader market. A big no-no with the DOCG because Brunello must be made with 100% Sangiovese. To protect people from paying a pretty penny for fake Brunello, the U.S. blocked imports that did not come with official proof of being 100% Sangiovese.
