About this Siena Tour
Rolling green hills dotted with tall and regal cypress trees, sprawling vineyards, and fragrant olive groves. Charming hamlets and cobblestone streets complete the landscape. This is the Tuscany you've dreamed about. And Chianti is nestled in the heart of it, home to some of the best-known wines in Italy.
Chianti is also home to many farms across its verdant countryside and your journey begins at one just in time for sunset. Upon your arrival, you will be welcomed with an Italian aperitivo. This indulgence is an Italian social custom. You'll be served a refreshing drink and a few nibbles to whet your appetite while watching the sun set over the vineyards.
After a bit of relaxing and socializing, you'll be seated for the main course. Your taste buds will experience the unique flavors of Tuscan cuisine with a four-course meal featuring locally sourced ingredients from the farm and the surrounding area. And of course, the feast is accompanied by the finest wines of the region, topping off a culinary experience in an idyllic setting you won't soon forget.
Enjoy an after-dinner stroll through the ancient village of Castellina in Chianti. Founded by the Etruscans, Castellina has a long history that dates back to the Bronze Age. The historic architectural remains of this bygone era are evident today. As you wander up and down its cobblestone streets, you may stumble upon the Via delle Volte. This medieval arched passageway, once used by soldiers to protect the town, now houses quaint shops and restaurants. Castellina preserves its medieval history in many of its structures including the Rocca on the main square with its 14th-century tower and the Church of San Salvatore, home to an early 15th-century fresco, Madonna with Child, by Bicci di Lorenzo.
After enjoying this unique culinary and historic experience in the enchanting Chianti hills, you'll be sure to have sweet dreams.
The legend of Chianti's black rooster
Have you ever noticed a black rooster on the bottle neck of wine from the Chianti Classico region? At 700 years old, the world-famous rooster is a legend. Forever fighting over rights to the wine-producing region situated between them, Florence and Siena had a competition to end the feuds. At the rooster's crow, horsemen set out from each city and where they met would determine boundary lines. Florence chose a starving, black rooster who crowed well before sunrise, which gave them an advantage and rights to the region. Cock-a-doodle do indeed!
