About This Siena Tour
Grab your favorite shades and driving shoes. You're going cruising, Italian style. Under the guidance of an expert tour leader, you'll motor your way through the hilly countryside in a fully restored vintage FIAT 500. Although it may not have the speed of a Ferrari, it has about 500 times the charisma, plus a charming fold-back roof so you can enjoy some time in the Tuscan sun with every twist, turn, rise, and dip in the road.
Channel the spirit of old school Italian racecar drivers as you cover some of the same mileage as the famed Mille Miglia, a classic road race that crossed its final finish line in 1961. These serpentine roadways will wind you past vineyards, monasteries, hilltop villages, and more. Don't worry, your tour leader won't let you miss any of the must-sees. Organized stops will give you the chance to stretch your legs and take in some of Chianti's history and culture.
Long before racecars. Even before rule by the Roman Empire. The Chianti region was producing primo vino. There is evidence of Etruscans cultivating and grafting vines and creating hybrids for wine making. Since then, the entire world has turned to Chianti to fill its stemware with generous, tasteful pours. In 1984, the region received the denomination D.O.C.G., the highest honor and recognition for quality Italian wines.
Want a sip? Your final destination at a countryside villa renowned for producing fine wines in the region's traditions features a tour of its medieval cellars. Of course, you'll also sample the fruits of this winery's labors, complemented by a light lunch showcasing fresh Tuscan produce. With your hunger and curiosity satisfied, it's time to GoBe an Italian racecar driver again as you advance your way toward this tour's checkered flag.
A whopping $1.2 Mille-ion bid
In 2009, a 1937 Alfa Romeo 2300MM was sold on eBay for $1.2 million. Wondering how this antique ride fetched such a high price? Well, the Alfa was once owned by Mussolini, the fascist dictator who was executed by his own people in 1945. Plus, the vehicle was raced in the 1937 Mille Miglia, driven by Mussolini's personal chauffeur. Who also happened to be his cousin. So it seems we can add nepotism to this Italian dictator's list of misdeeds.
