      • Piazza del Campo: This town square, the heart of old Siena, is home to the famous Il Palio horse races. Make a wish at the Fonte Gaia, "Fountain of the World," that dates from the 1400s and is decorated with elaborate carvings.
      • Torre del Mangia: Built in the 14th century as one of the tallest medieval towers in Italy, it's the same height as the cathedral to show the equality of church and state. Stand in the shadow of this impressive structure rising above the Piazza del Campo or climb 400 steps to the top for a commanding view of the city and countryside.
      • Siena Cathedral: This church, a stunning example of Tuscan architecture and a lasting testament to the medieval power of Siena, was mostly built in the 1200s. The building proudly shows off Siena's traditional black and white color scheme inside and out.

The interior of the Siena Cathedral is sure to dazzle you, and not only because of its striped black and white columns. According to the story, the two founders of Siena rode pure black and white horses, remembered now in the contrasting colors of the cathedral. The origin of the black and white color scheme of the cathedral is only one legend you'll learn on this GoBe walking tour of Siena's historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visit the Piazza del Campo, home to some of the most impressive sites in the city. The city's different contrade, or wards, compete for the prize in Siena's twice-a-summer Il Palio horse races. Horses from 10 of the 17 contrade run around a track right in the Piazza del Campo, shaded by the massive Torre del Mangia, one of Italy's largest medieval towers.

As your guide leads you through the old city, you'll experience the past at every turn. Check out the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena's city hall. See the grand Basilica San Domenico, which houses the relics of St. Catherine of Siena, one of the first women to be named a Doctor of the Church by the Vatican. Visit any of the city's museums or just stroll the streets to see incomparable works of art.

Hear the tales of the noble families that helped found the city, including the Piccolomini, Tolomei, and Salimbeni, and see their palazzos. No matter what's on your Siena wish list, start here for a proper introduction to this breathtaking place.

      Heads up

One of Siena's most famous residents was Caterina di Giacomo di Benincasa, better known across the world today as St. Catherine of Siena. Renowned for her miraculous visions and holy deeds during her life, Catherine was declared a saint by Pope Pius II in 1461. The Basilica San Domenico in Siena contains one of the most important relics of St. Catherine: her preserved head. A story about the head's journey to Siena says that it was brought there in secret from Rome. According to the legend, when the people carrying the head were searched by Roman guards, the head appeared to them as rose petals, resuming its true form once it reached Siena. Even saints can be tricky sometimes!
