About This Siena Tour
The lyrical name Piazza dei Miracoli was coined by an Italian poet. It means "Square of Miracles," and its atmospheric setting and artistic wonders are Pisa's most phenomenal sights. In an airy expanse of verdant grass, the beauty of magnificent white marble buildings seems magnified. And, while that Torre Pendente (Leaning Tower) may be the big deal here, there's more. Count on this square to rock you back on your heels.
Enter the splendor of Pisa's Duomo (cathedral) to see a massive mosaic in the apse, masterpieces of art, and a 14th-century pulpit. Admire the Baptistery's harmonious Romanesque and Gothic styles (can you detect that this building also leans a bit?) and the frescoes adorning the monumental cemetery building. Gaze at that famous tilting tower as your guide entertains with slightly askew tales that go way back to 1173.
Elegant Lucca's sights and stories can be traced to the first century A.D., when the Romans built an amphitheater here. Your guide shows you how the town's elliptical central plaza, the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, mirrors that space and contains a few ancient remnants, too. The Piazza, now the center for daily life, is just one of the architectural jewels that reveal Lucca's heritage. From its walls to old center, the clues are everywhere.
The impressive Guinigi Tower, built by a prosperous family as a status symbol, is evidence of the wealthy life that thrived in these medieval streets in the 1300s. And St. Martin's Cathedral has centuries more stories to spill (ask your guide about the legend that explains why the facade's columns are all different). Its attached bell tower is a beauty, and stands perfectly straight. Perhaps it was built right in to make sure of that.
Even a dictator couldn't do it
Built on unstable soil, the Leaning Tower began tilting soon after it was started, leading to centuries of fixes. Architects tried adding stories with one side taller than the other. In the 1930s, Mussolini ordered a concrete counterweight. Lead weights were added in the 1990s. Nothing worked until the early 2000s, when it was stabilized with soil extraction and a drainage system. The engineers left enough tilt to maintain this tower's star power.
Please make your way to Piazza Gramsci (in front of Bar La Lizza), Siena.
This tour is only available on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Lunch in on your own. The climbing of the Leaning Tower is not included. Ticket lines can be very long in the peak months for this opportunity.
Plan to walk a distance of 2 miles on paved sidewalks with steps and up inclines. If your mobility is limited, this tour may be too challenging for you to enjoy and maintain the pace of the group. It is not wheelchair accessible.
