      About this Siena Tour

San Gimignano, the "Town of Fine Towers," is known for its medieval tower houses and palazzos. The Tuscan hill town is also known for Vernaccia, a white wine produced from the ancient variety of grapes grown on its sandstone hillsides. It boasts the distinction of being the region's only white wine to reach DOCG status.

On this GoBe discovery of San Gimignano, you'll visit a local cellar and taste the exquisite Vernaccia in addition to several of the region's favorites. Tuscany is home to some of the world's most notable wine regions and your tasting includes Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino made with Sangiovese grapes. You'll also sip Supertoscano, or "Super Tuscan," a Bordeaux blend made mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Round out the tasting with Vin Santo, a dessert wine made from a variety of the region's grapes.

San Gimignano is a gastronomic tour de force thanks to the development of trade on the Via Francigena, the road crossed by thousands of Catholic pilgrims on their way to Rome and the Vatican during the middle ages. The trading of agriculture from the fertile neighboring hills also built the town's culinary reputation.

Pair the wine with samplings of Tuscan oils including extra virgin olive oil, truffle oil, pepper oil, and balsamic vinegar. Accompanying the oils is a traditional Italian salad, fennel-infused finocchiona salami, Tuscan salami, cheeses, and bruschetta. Experience the tastes of this medieval town on your epicurean Tuscan adventure.

      A tale of two towers

You can tell how much power a man has by the size of his…tower? Such was the case in medieval San Gimignano. The Torri dei Salvucci in the Piazza Duomo, also called the Torri Gemelle (or Twin Towers), was built by the Salvucci family, the city's most prominent. Their bitter enemies, the Ardinghellis, built twin towers on the opposite side of the piazza to show them they weren't all that. Luckily, an ordinance prevented either from building any higher.
