Tuscany Island Pleasures; Giglio and Giannutri

      Siena, Italy
From (USD) $107 Per Adult / $54 Per Child
      • Travel made easy from Siena: Drive to Talamone, then enjoy an hour boat ride to Giglio where you'll have free time. At lunch, stay here or take a 40-minute boat ride to Giannutri for more free time before you return to Talamone.
      • Giglio: This mountainous isle, with its granite cliffs, lush vegetation, rare species, and excellent sandy beaches, is one of seven islands of the Tuscan archipelago. Check out Giglio Castello, a medieval village with massive city walls. Enjoy gelato made daily with fresh fruit.
      • Giannutri: Explore this tiny, moon-shaped island that boasts limestone, jagged cliffs, beautiful coves, and caves that fill with water at high tide. See the many species of birds that nest here. Join a guided tour of Villa Domizia, an ancient Roman residential complex (for a fee).
      • Flexible leisure time: Spend your day on one or both islands however you like. Lounge on a beach, swim, dine on fresh seafood, explore the towns and historic sites, hike the terrain, or rent a scooter.
      About This Siena Tour

Live out your own version of Under the Tuscan Sun, but on an Italian island (or two). On this day-long journey to the isles of Giglio and Giannutri, two of the seven that make up the Tuscan archipelago, give yourself permission to do what you like and be as active (or inactive) as you like. While Italians love to holiday on these islands, few outside the country know about these rocky isles with their clear blue water, enchanting port villages, and sunny beaches.

Head to Talamone, one of the first commercial ports for both the Romans and Etruscans. Then let the ocean breezes caress your face as you cross the sea to Giglio where you'll enjoy a free morning. Perhaps you'll make like a local and rent a scooter to explore the island, savor a just-caught seafood meal for lunch at an outdoor trattoria, and try a panficato, a dense fig cake that originated on this island in the 16th century.

In the afternoon, remain on Giglio or head to the southernmost of the Tuscan islands, Giannutri. Once here, enjoy unspoiled beaches or join a guided tour of Villa Domizia. This ancient prestigious maritime villa was once an imperial territory during the reign of Nero in the 1st century AD. At the end of this memorable island trip, a comfortable boat ride will return you to Talamone where your coach will be waiting to take you back to Florence. While in transit, close your eyes and reflect on a day spent in paradise.

      Shipwreck island

Giglio, whose reef witnessed the wreck of an Etruscan vessel as far back as 600 BC, made international news again when the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia came too close to shore and struck an underwater rock formation on the ocean floor. The night was January 13, 2012, and the ship, which capsized before sinking, was tantalizingly close to the shoreline. Thankfully most of the 4,252 onboard survived, with Giglio's villagers jumping in the water and saving passengers. Some local women even met their future partners through the disaster.
