About This Sorrento Tour
Prostitutes, pornography, graffiti. Sounds like New York's Times Square in the 1970s. But it also was what was thriving in Pompeii when the Roman town was hit by a volcano. Mount Vesuvius has blown its top more than 50 times, but its most famous eruption occurred nearly 2,000 years ago, on August 24, 79 A.D., when it spewed ashes and lapilli (volcanic pumice) on Pompeii for 36 hours, buried it up to 20 feet, and killed an estimated 16,000 people.
When archaeologists rediscovered Pompeii in 1748, they were surprised to see that the volcano's ashes preserved the entire town, a moment frozen in time. This gave them (and us!) an amazing and unvarnished picture of what ancient life was like during the Roman Empire. Skeletons were found right where the bodies fell as they died. Even everyday foods like fruit and bread were uncovered, as well as water bowls and vases. There are mosaic-inlaid floors and well-preserved frescoes, including some that advertised the services available in the local brothels. Graffiti consisted of people quoting poems and adding their own sardonic twists. It just goes to show that the more times change, the more people remain the same.
There are always new things to see at Pompeii. Archaeologists have only excavated about 2/3 of the town and are still uncovering and preserving the past today. The drive to and from the town is worth paying attention to as well. You'll see some of the most breathtaking scenery around. Yup, epic views combined with the world's coolest history lesson. Dig it.
Eyewitness news, Roman style
There was at least one surviving witness to Mount Vesuvius' eruption that destroyed Pompeii. Pliny the Younger was only a teenager in 79 A.D., but he showed a reporter's attention to detail in recapping the event 25 years later in letters to Cornelius Tacitus. While he didn't get all of the facts right, his description of the volcano was so vivid, scientists now call that volcanic eruption a "Plinian eruption." Now that's a nose for news.
