About This Sorrento Tour
One of the joys of visiting Italy is getting to indulge in the food. And how better to do that than to learn from the pros? Neapolitan cuisine, with its ancient Greco-Roman roots, is centered around seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, olive oil, pasta, herbs like basil, and other fresh ingredients. Red meat is served on special occasions.
When you consider what is described as the Mediterranean diet, you may be thinking of Neapolitan food. Since Naples and Sorrento are near Pompeii, home of Mount Vesuvius, fruits and vegetables that are planted in the volcanic soil grow abundantly. Perhaps the quintessential Neapolitan dish is pizza margherita, made with San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala Campana, fresh basil, and pizza dough. It's a patriotic meal, too, with its red, white, and green colors resembling Italy's flag.
On this excursion, you'll learn how to make some of the best dishes in Neapolitan cuisine, as well as see historic Sorrento. This private cooking lesson takes place in the Palazzo Marziale, a mansion built six centuries ago. To help get your culinary vibe going, you'll don a chef's apron and hat during your lesson, too. Pretty cool.
You'll learn to make pasta from scratch, as well as other local dishes. These could include ravioli, potato timbale (potatoes mashed into a puree, mixed with cheese, eggs, and sausage), grilled beef entrecote, and tiramusu for dessert. Your recipes may vary, depending upon the season. At the end of your lesson, you'll take home a book of recipes, your chef's hat and apron, and mad cooking skills. Buon appetito.
When life gives you lemons, make limoncello
Sorrento is known for its big, fragrant, bright yellow lemons. While some of these lemons are used to add flavor to cooking, 60% go to making limoncello, a liqueur made by soaking lemon peels in alcohol and adding sugar. This aperitif was a homegrown delicacy for hundreds of years. Now it's being made commercially, getting a Limone di Sorrento IGP geographic designation (similar to the AOC denotation for cheeses). Cheers.
