Venice by Kayak and Pub Visit

      Venice, Italy
From (USD) $106 Per Person (Minimum 2)
      • Cannaregio: Discover this historic district, once the setting for the Jewish Ghetto, and home to busy Strada Nuova, one of the city's main streets. See how just one turn off the Grand Canal introduces you to the quiet side of Venice.
      • Osteria stop: Enjoy a visit to a local tavern, where you'll sample cicchetti (Venice's version of tapas) and toast your adventure over a glass of local wine.
      • Paddle or pedal: The kayak you'll be touring in is a two-person vessel that comes equipped with foot pedals you can use if you want a break from rowing.
      About this Venice tour

Venice has two sides. One features the hustle and bustle of wide-eyed tourists rushing to take it all in; the other is the soothing quiet of the back streets and canals that the locals call home. The Cannaregio district is a blend of both.

Cannaregio borders the Grand Canal and forms part of the Venice of postcards. It was here that the historic Jewish Ghetto once stood, so the district is well visited. But your tour takes place by kayak, which means you can access any canal in the city. So the Venice you'll see is the Venice of the locals.

Notice how the rays of sunlight are reflected in the calmer, bright-green canal water. There's a certain luminescence in Cannaregio, a quality taken advantage of by famous painters Tintoretto and Titian; both lived here in the 16th century.

You'll also notice how serene Venice can be away from the crowds. And if you look closely at the water's edge against the buildings, you'll see the tell-tale signs that the city is indeed sinking.

Of course, in the Venice of the locals there's always time to stop at an osteria for a glass of wine and a bite of cicchetti (chi-KET-tee), the Venetian finger food. Choices may include traditional fried calamari and mozzarella, new delicacies like baccala mantecato (codfish in olive oil, garlic, and parsley), and polpette (a fried meatball made with veal and potatoes). And if you want wine, ask for an ombra.

That's how the locals do it.

      Wine in the shadows

In times past, wine sellers with portable bars used to scoot around the city selling wine. To stay cooler, they'd keep to the shady side of the streets and plazas where they set up shop. That tradition is now gone, but it left the locals with a bit of slang they still use. When Venetians want a glass of wine, they ask for an ombra, which means shadow.
