Venice by Kayak with St. Mark's Square

      Venice, Italy
From (USD) $148 Per Person (Minimum 2)
      • St. Mark's Square: Enjoy a distinctive view of the Doge's Palace, the Bell Tower, and the St. Mark and St. Theodore columns that rise between the palace and the Library of St. Mark at the entrance to the Piazzatta (small square).
      • Bridge of Sighs: This magnificent, 36-foot enclosed white limestone bridge was once a path to prison, and features two windows with stone bars. From the kayak, you'll get up-close views of the faces sculpted into it, some sad, some angry.
      • Paddle or pedal: The kayak you'll be touring in is a two-person vessel that comes equipped with foot pedals you can use if you want a break from rowing.
      About this Venice tour

In the early 15th century, when ships approached the legendary city of Venice, the first thing they saw was the impressive Doge's Palace. On this kayak tour of la Serenissima, you'll see the palace the way they saw it.

Purposely designed to convey power and wealth, the Doge's Palace is a superb example of Venetian Gothic architecture – a massive building that manages to look elegant and  light despite its imposing size.

You'll also have an interesting angle from which to take photos of the two welcoming columns at the entrance to the square. The Byzantine columns were imported from Tyre, Lebanon, in 1125, and  used to honor Venice's two patron saints in 1172. St. Theodore, the warrior saint, is shown in marble slaying a dragon: St. Mark is represented by a gilded winged lion.

Next to St. Theodore's column, overlooking the canal, is the Venice Library. Created by sculptor and architect Jacopo Sansovino, the building oozes Roman iconography, such as a column-and-arcade design similar to that of the Colosseum.

You'll also be able to see the Campenilla, or Bell Tower – at 328 feet (including the 10-foot statue of the Archangel Gabriel at the top) it's the tallest structure in Venice – and the majestic domes of the Basilica of St. Mark should also be visible. It's all for you to enjoy from a point of view that dates back 600 years.

      Constantly growing in sighs

The Bridge of Sighs was built to connect the Doge's Palace, where justice was handed out, to the new prison built across the canal in the late 16th century. Some say the bridge got its name from the way crossing prisoners would sigh as they saw Venice through the bridge's tiny windows. But another story claims that if a couple kisses under the bridge at sunset, they'll enjoy eternal love – it's a popular custom, like throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain.
