      Venice by Kayak

      Venice, Italy
From (USD) $59 Per Person (Minimum 2)
      • A different perspective: What better way to discover Venice than from the water, traveling along main waterways as well as back-alley canals, like the locals do.
      • Jewish Ghetto: Paddle up to the historic district that was specifically designated for Venice's Jewish population in 1516, creating the very first ghetto in Europe.
      • Paddle or pedal: The kayak you'll be touring in is a two-person vessel that comes equipped with foot pedals you can use if you want a break from rowing.
      About this Venice tour

Discover an exciting new way to get acquainted with Venice – and quite possibly, the most appropriate. Venice is a city of water; exploring it by kayak is not only natural, it'll make you feel like you're a part of it.

On this introductory tour, you and a small group of fellow adventurers will follow your guide to the historic Jewish Ghetto; in fact, you'll be kayaking on the same waters that  patrol boats once did to make sure no one left the Ghetto without permission.

To get there you'll break away from the usual visitor paths and travel some of the smaller, out-of-the-way canals used mainly by the locals. It's like exploring Venice by gondola, except you're the gondolier, and you'll get a closer look at the neighborhoods around the Grand Canal. You'll venture into the hidden heart of the city; the local neighborhoods where generations of Venetians have lived, laughed, raised families, and grown old.

And as you cruise along enjoying the sights and the peace and quiet of Venice's "backstreets," you'll be glad you chose the canal less traveled.

      Caution, wet floor

"High water" (aqua alta) is a phenomenon that happens in Venice when unusually high tides flood parts of the city. Until 2007, World War II sirens were used to warn the people of the impending flooding. Now they use a recording of the old sirens followed by one to four tone-signals advising of the amount of flooding to expect; one tone means a water rise of 3½ feet, four means serious flooding with water rising more than 4½.
