Marken and Volendam Guided Excursion
Tour Participation Requirements
Imagine living your life cut off from the rest of society. Time passes, but nothing really changes. The winds and tides swirl around your little island, but life there is peaceful, laid back, timeless. That's what it was like for centuries on the island of Marken, your first stop on a tour of the water land region, just half an hour from Amsterdam.
As you leave the city behind, breathe in the fresh air and keep an eye out for the scenic farms, windmills, and canals you'll be passing. Prepare yourself to step back in time. Upon your arrival in Marken, you'll follow a tour guide around the tiny village, seeing the distinctive houses built up on pilings to protect them from floods. You may see villagers wearing traditional Dutch clothing as you meander the narrow streets past sites like the Grote Kerk church. It's easy to see why late 19th and early 20th-century folklorists and anthropologists studied Marken and its traditional native culture.
Leaving Marken, you'll hop back on your bus for a 15-minute drive to Volendam. Fish is the word in this village. Take some time to walk around the harbor, but don't get lost in "the labyrinth," the narrow, winding streets of the city center. Enjoy displays of traditional Dutch costume and try some of the freshly caught local seafood, especially the smoked eel for the brave!
Your adventure will conclude at a working cheese farm, where you'll learn about the cheese making process. Round out the day with cheese tasting and perhaps buy some for later, a delicious memory of your day in the country.
A stormy past
Marken was an island before the opening of a causeway in 1957 connected the small village to the mainland. But it wasn't always that way. In fact, Marken was cut off from the mainland by several fierce storms in the 13th century during the creation of the Zuiderzee, a large shallow bay. Another storm in 1916 led to the damming of the Zuiderzee and eventually the connection of Marken to the mainland. The isolation of Marken allowed it to retain the traditional customs that make it a destination for travelers today. Bad weather is sometimes a blessing!
