      About this Haarlem tour

Everyone held their breath as the 10-year-old boy sat down at the great organ and readied himself to play. Suddenly, beautiful music filled the air, floating up to the high vaulted ceilings of the venerable church. Mozart had come to Haarlem.

The city of Haarlem has long been a cultural mecca, as young Mozart's 1766 visit suggests. Become part of this city's rich history as this GoBe tour introduces you to the top sites and museums of Haarlem. Marvel at the wealth of historic buildings as you pass through centuries-old streets. Discover the magnificent interior of the Cathedral of Saint Bavo, including the mighty 18th-century organ played by luminaries like Mozart and Handel. Explore the Grote Markt, the market square, heart of the city and home to a statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, one of the fathers of the printing press.

Immerse yourself in art and history at the Frans Hals Museum and the Corrie ten Boom Museum. The Frans Hals Museum contains works of religious art confiscated from Catholic churches during the Protestant Reformation of the 1500s, as well as works by the 17th-century Dutch master and Haarlem resident Frans Hals. After the art museum, fast forward to WWII at the Corrie ten Boom Museum, where you can see the house where the Ten Boom family sheltered Jews during the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands. Shiver when you see the tiny secret room that allowed about 800 refugees to survive persecution.

Conclude your exploration with free time to wander this city's pretty streets, lined with boutiques and cozy restaurants. Let Haarlem take your breath away.

      Conquering heroes

Several features of Haarlem's Cathedral of Saint Bavo directly relate to the bloody wars of the Middle Ages. A famous painting of the cathedrals namesake, Saint Bavo, shows the saint miraculously saving the city of Haarlem from an attack by the rival Kennemers in 1274. Two small bells in the cathedral commemorate the victory of Haarlem's Crusader knights over the city of Damietta, Egypt, in 1218. The bells have rung nightly since the 16th century, a reminder of a time when the city closed its gates for protection every evening. The walls are long gone, so luckily you don't have to worry about a curfew!
